HOW TO AVOID AND RECOVER FROM BURNOUT

A recent study from professional network Blind found that a staggering 61% of professionals consider themselves currently “burnt out.” Burnout, which is shorthand for the physical and emotional exhaustion that stems from overwork and high levels of stress, seems to get more common by the day. If you’re facing a case of burnout, here are a few tips for either staving it off — or finding your way back to feeling energized about your work.


 

Schedule your breaks 

By now we all know that breaks, be those short breaks throughout the workday or vacation time, are essential to preventing burnout and managing stress. That’s why it’s so important to make sure you’re taking them as often as you should. Setting alarms throughout the day to remind you to step back, eat, or move can help ensure that you don’t get so deep into your work that you miss the chance to rest.

Plan things you enjoy

It isn’t enough to simply have time where you’re not working. Instead, it’s important to also make sure you’re doing things that energize and excite you. Reconnect with hobbies you enjoy, or try new things that you may not normally feel like you have time for. Doing things you genuinely enjoy is a great way to recharge your batteries.

Get physical

It’s tempting to believe stress is all in the mind, but it has an impact on the body, too. As such, it’s important to take good care of yourself physically as well. Get regular exercise, make sure you’re drinking enough water, and try to eat well when possible.

Make structural changes

Most important of all is recognizing what led to your burnout and identifying ways that you can prevent it from happening again. This may mean changing your responsibilities, delegating certain tasks, or adjusting your schedule.
